Aerobic Septic Alarm Going Off? What It Means and What to Do
A red light or buzzing panel in the yard is your system asking for help. Here's what it usually means.
- Septic pumping, aerobic maintenance & repairs
- Conventional and aerobic systems
- Free, no-obligation quotes
First steps
- Silence the alarm with the button on the panel if there is one (the light may stay on).
- Cut back on water use right away: hold off on laundry, dishwasher and long showers.
- Check that the breaker for the septic system hasn't tripped.
- Request service. Many alarms need a technician to diagnose.
Common causes
| What you notice | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Alarm plus strong odor | Air pump (aerator) failed; bacteria aren't getting oxygen |
| Alarm after heavy water use or rain | High water level in the pump tank |
| Alarm and sprinklers not running | Failed effluent pump, float switch or timer |
| Alarm with no obvious symptoms | Electrical issue, tripped breaker or bad float |
Don't ignore it
A failed aerator or pump can lead to untreated wastewater being sprayed, odors, and backups into the house. Repairs like an air pump replacement are usually much cheaper than fixing damage from a system left running broken. If your maintenance contract is current, your provider may cover some service calls. Request septic service.
